The entire Northern Panhandle sat in "orange" for the second straight day Friday on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources daily COVID-19 alert map.

If those designations hold for Saturday evening's school openings map from the West Virginia Department of Education, then students in Hancock, Brooke, Ohio and Marshall counties all will learn remotely this coming week.

All four counties were in the same position last week, though Hancock and Ohio counties were "orange" and Brooke and Marshall counties were "red."

Ohio County had an infection rate of 85.90 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 6.62 on Friday's map, while Marshall County had an infection rate of 83.29 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 7.64.

Hancock County had an infection rate of 81.32 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 5.08, while Brooke County had an infection rate of 76.19 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 5.31.

The Marshall County Health Department reported 54 new positive COVID-19 cases, along with three probable cases in its Friday evening update. That pushes the county's totals past 1,000 confirmed positive cases to 1,031, with 154 more probable cases. Twelve people are hospitalized and there have been 25 COVID-related deaths.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported 43 new COVID-19 cases in Ohio County, bringing its totals to 1,552 cases, including 18 COVID-related deaths.
