US Companies Leading the Way for Global Casino Revenue

3 min read

Despite the US having some of the most complicated gambling laws in the world, the top five casino companies are American. Six of the top ten companies are from the US, with three Chinese companies and a single Malaysian company making up the other operators.

Current US regulations allow each state to decide their own fate in terms of betting markets. 44 states currently allow some form of land-based casino activity, with Indian gaming being the most widespread.

Online gambling still has a way to go, with only six states allowing online casino operations. However, US consumers can access offshore operators. Online gambling expert Daniel Smyth explains that some options also offer various benefits including bonuses, fast payouts, and a variety of payment methods including cryptocurrencies (source: https://www.techopedia.com/gambling/fastest-payout-casinos).

While there are still some prohibitions on casino gambling in the country, US operators are still streets ahead of other companies, with MGM Resorts posting revenue figures for 2023 of $16.16 billion, and they will be hoping to top that number in 2024.

The second most successful casino company in the world is Caesar’s Entertainment which earned $11.53 billion with Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts, and Penn National Gaming making up the top 5 with earnings of $10.37 billion, $6.53 billion, and 6.36 billion respectively.

The top non-US casino company in the world is China’s Galaxy Entertainment Group whose $4.58 billion equates to less than a third of MGM Resorts’ revenue.

MGM Resorts was founded in 1986 and boasts operations in the US, Macau, China, and Japan and employs more than 83,000 people. There is lots of potential for growth, especially in the US where campaigners are challenging existing legislation in states where casino gambling is prohibited.

The proliferation of states that now allow online sports betting could also serve to improve the chances of online casino legislation being amended. These markets have provided a valuable revenue stream for states through licensing and taxation, with funds going towards improving infrastructure, education, and responsible gambling programs.

The popularity of offshore betting sites has given different jurisdictions food for thought, with citizens being able to access online casinos regardless of local laws.

Legislative changes could see states enjoy greater control over the industry, and this will be good news for land-based operators. States that have legalized online casino gambling have issued licenses to operators who partner with existing land-based operators.

2025 will also see downstate New York issue three new casino licenses, with bids coming from MGM Resorts, Caesars, and Las Vegas Sands among others. Should any of these bids be approved or legislative changes take place, US operators will continue to exert their dominance on the global casino market, and we may see other operators break into the top ten.

While downstate New York casinos will be a few years off, it does promise a bright future for the country's gambling operators and industry as a whole.
