Karen Vuranch as Clara Barton

MOUNDSVILLE -- The talented Karen Vuranch returns to the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library on Thursday, September 5, for a 6 p.m. performance as famed Civil War nurse Clara Barton.

This dramatic and informative program is aimed at adults and school-age children.

The audience will have the chance to ask questions of the featured historical character in what is known as Chautauqua-style theater, which blends historical scholarship with acting and performer-audience interacting.

Those attending will also get to ask questions of Vuranch herself when she steps out of character for the program's conclusion.

Barton was known as "The Angel of the Battlefield" during the American Civil War, providing care and supplies to the troops.

Her compassion and good works in many dangerous situations throughout the late 1800s earned her a world-wide reputation.

She almost single-handedly founded the American Red Cross organization.

A professional storyteller, award-winning performer and teacher, Vuranch offers a variety of programs and workshops through WV Enterprises. She has traveled extensively bringing historical characters to life and participating in events celebrating the rich oral traditions of the Appalachian region and peoples around the world.

Sponsorship for this special library event is provided by the Robert Baker Family.

It is free and open to the public, starting at the library's normal closing time, 6 p.m.
