Untitled work by Jane Seward

WHEELING -- Artworks Around is pleased to present the stunning works of guest artist Jane Seward. A reception will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 4, to welcome her and celebrate her light filled paintings.

The opening is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Seward was born in England and moved to West Virginia in 1980. Before her painting career started she was busy raising five children and managing a health food store. She has a master herbalist degree from the School of Natural Healing and a B.A. in organizational management and leadership from Wheeling Jesuit University.

Watching her daughters work on art projects sparked her interest in exploring the various mediums available to painters. She has used oils and acrylics but found her favorite to be watercolor and Japanese pigment.

She mixes dry pigment with water and glue to make the latter. Seward credits her Japanese instructor, Hiromi Katayana with showing her constant encouragement while teaching her the skills she needed to make art.

She still considers herself a student and lifelong learner, in her words, she is "enjoying the exploration, curious to see where this journey will lead." Her subject matter relies heavily on nature. Walking in the woods next to her home has inspired much of what she paints. Bold color and contrast are a pivotal part of her paintings.

The Sexual Assault Help Center and artist Patty Nies share the Student Gallery. Bold, thought provoking paintings as well as whimsical paper mache animals adorn the space.

Artworks is a non profit gallery and art center dedicated to providing the best in art and instruction to the surrounding community. Located in Wheeling's Historic Centre Market, the Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Ongoing worships in painting are offered. A critique will be held on Sept. 2 at noon at the Gallery. This is an informal gathering of artists who share suggestions and hints about works in progress.
