Choose Your Comfort Zone

By Heather Ziegler 3 min read

There are three kinds of people. There are those who chose to sleep under a fluffy comforter. Then there are those who prefer the feel of a quilt as they hit the sheets. Finally, there are those who would rather snuggle under a traditional bedspread.

You can tell a lot about a person based on his or her choice of bed coverings. Comforters are usually the choice of those who enjoy a soft, fluffy experience under the sheets. Comforters often come with matching pillow covers and can be a good buy; or you can choose the more expensive down-filled styles.

As for quilts, they are for those who appreciate the detailed stitching and unlimited number of cotton quilt designs that have covered beds since our country was founded. Quilts have always meant a warm, inviting experience with a personal touch.

Now for the bedspreads. These seem to be less popular these days and harder to find. Retailers appear to focus on the comforter sets and colorful quilts in their ads. I guess fashions in bedding change with each new generation.

I personally embrace all three styles. I have been the fortunate recipient of several hand-made family heirloom-quality quilts, and I treat them with the respect they deserve. Every stitch was made by the loving hands of skilled family members no longer with us.

I also appreciate the old-style cotton chenille bedspreads that leave you with lines on your face if you fall asleep on top of them. And comforter sets are a nice way to spruce up the spare bedroom.

In this country today, we have three political parties.

Each has its own qualities that attract voters to their points of view. I see the Republican Party as the quilts that remain within the lines of their platform and rarely digress from the party's ideology.

As for the Democrats, I see many varying liberal points of view that lead me to view its members as comforters who want to please every cause.

The Independent Party followers, on the other hand, bring to mind the bedspreads that want to cover all issues but sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

The presidential election is more than a year away. The news outlets are filled with the banter among the political party wannabes. It's already overwhelming and annoying.

I don't know about you, but some days I feel like pulling the quilt, comforter and bedspread over my head to drown out the name calling, party bashing and outright lies flying around like the unwanted stink bugs hitting my windows.

How about you?
