Enjoying The Simple Pleasures

3 min read

As an experienced grandparent, I have learned that there are so many simple pleasures that can only be enjoyed with grandchildren. I have learned that as grandparents, our expectations are so distant from that which we required of our children. It's probably not fair. It's just the way it is.

So this past week we had a one-on-one with grandson Deacon. As it turned out, the timing of our visit together was also the week of the Marshall County Fair. Deacon was thrilled with the thought of seeing the oversized pigs and other animals on display. We kind of were, too.

Nothing brings out the child in all of us more than the offerings at a local county fair. Where else can you see a teeny circus act with a silly clown/magician and his trained dogs and horse? At the Marshall County Fair, that's where.

The cows, goats, rabbits and pigs were being judged the day we attended. It was so nice to see the pride on the faces of those youngsters who brought their animals to the fair. I can imagine it's mixed emotions knowing you would eventually be letting go of the animal that you raised from a very young age. Yet the blue ribbons brought smiles to the faces of many of those kids and their parents.

We attended during the day and elected not to stay for the nighttime carnival rides and other attractions suited for a little older crowd of young people. Still we managed to see, hear and taste all that we could while at the fair. Deacon opted for a corn dog and lemonade and was not disappointed with his choices.

Our day in Marshall County did not end at the fair. Since it was a hot afternoon, we made the drive up to Grandview Park and experienced the new swimming pool there.

It is worth the drive up that winding hill to reach this paradise of a pool.

It has something for all ages, including two very popular water slides that kept our grandson busy.

The water was crystal clear and provided a wonderful respite from the heat.

The pool was busy with lots of young families perfectly served by the various pool depths and attractions. A day at this pool left us tired and refreshed at the same time.

I feel very fortunate to have so many simple things to do with grandkids. Sometimes it's the sight of animals in a zoo or wading in a stream on a summer day.

Pack a picnic lunch and visit one of the many parks or even playgrounds for a memorable afternoon. We just might run into each other yet.
