Newcomers Club

The Wheeling Newcomers Club will hold a luncheon meeting at Wheeling Country Club at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The program will feature Nini Zadrozny, owner of Nini's Treasures. She will discuss her evolution as a shop owner and will have jewelry, accessories and clothing items for sale. Luncheon will be served after the program; a vegetarian option is available. People First

The Belmont County chapter of People First will meet at the Ohio Valley Mall's community room in St. Clairsville from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday. Plans will be made for a spaghetti dinner and an art class. Sand Hill Club

The Sand Hill Community Educational Outreach Service Club will meet Tuesday at Eat'n Park restaurant at The Highlands at noon Tuesday. Barb Kilgore will present the lesson, "West Virginia Quilt Trails."

Genealogical Society

Because of the library's closing for Columbus Day, Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the meeting room at the St. Clairsville Public Library, 108 W. Main St. Cheryl Borkoski, Morristown resident and fiscal officer, will talk about former Morristown residents who connect to an heirloom coverlet purchased recently by the Morristown Historical Society. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Lunch With Books

Jay Frey of Wheeling will appear at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to discuss "From Land Grant to Neighborhood: A Chronicle of Wheeling's North Park."

Film Showing

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will present a "Think Outside the Book" film, "Lion," rated PG-13, at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The bio-drama is adapted from Saroo Brierley's book, "A Long Way Home."

The film showing is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring snacks and seat cushions.

Ormet Retirees

The Ormet Retirees Club Local 5724 will meet at Hannibal Grade School at 1 p.m. Tuesday. All workers retired from Ormet may join. Meetings include doughnuts, coffee and gifts. For more information, call Larry Highly, president, 304-997-6149.

Soup-Salad Luncheon

Crittenton Services' annual soup and salad luncheon will be held Wednesday at the McLure Hotel, 1200 Market St., Wheeling, with free parking in the adjacent garage. Doors will be opened at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will begin at noon.

Tickets can be purchased online at florenencecrittenton.net or at the door. Carry-out orders also will be available. Proceeds benefit the Crittenton Cares volunteer program, providing items and activities for the young women in the residential treatment program. Door prizes and themed basket raffles also are offered.

Workshop

A community resource workshop, "Caring for Those with Memory Loss," will be held at First Christian Church, 1343 National Road, Wheeling, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Sign-in starts at 9 a.m. To register, call Ann Koegler, 304-243-0996.

Several speakers will address in-home services and community support. Special sessions will be offered on legal issues, Project Lifesaver and waiver services.

DHHR Retirees

Retirees and former employees of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources will meet for lunch at Generations, 336 National Road, Wheeling, at 1 p.m. Thursday.

People's University

The People's University's new course, "West Virginia History Through Archives: Preserving the Mountain State's Stories," continues at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ohio County Public Library's auditorium, 52 16th St.,

Wheeling.

Dan Bonenberger, a Wheeling native and assistant professor of historic preservation at Eastern Michigan University, will discuss "Wheeling's Treasure Maps: Using New Digital Tools to Find the Oldest Surviving Homes in North Wheeling." Classes are free and open to the public.

Woman's Club

The Moundsville Woman's Club will meet at First Presbyterian Church in Moundsville at noon Friday. Paige Madden will be the guest speaker. President Cindy Prettyman will conduct a business meeting.

Support Group

Hoagie Sale

The Wheeling Island Lions Club is holding a hoagie sale. Orders are due Thursday. Orders may be placed for either Italian or turkey hoagies.

Hoagies will be made at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wheeling Island and may be picked up or delivered after 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16. They also can be delivered the morning of Oct. 17.

Proceeds from the hoagie sale will be used to help the club's various outreach projects and its scholarships. To order hoagies, call Lions president Bill Syphers at 304-233-0199.

Campfire Storytelling

Campfire storytelling with Rich Knoblich will take place at the ZipLine base camp, Shelter 1, Grand Vue Park, Moundsville, from 7-8 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 19. The free event is organized by the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

Rummage Sale

Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger St., Wheeling, will have a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to noon and 4-6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Garage and Soup Sale

A fall garage and soup sale will be held at Warwood United Methodist Church, 1438 Warwood Ave., Wheeling, from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday. A variety of merchandise will be offered. Vegetable and chicken noodle soup will be sold by the quart.

Ohio Valley Promenaders

The Ohio Valley Promenaders will hold a square, round and line dance at the Bellaire Public Library, 32nd and Guernsey streets, from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday. Callers will be Bob Tomlinson, Chuck Berry and Jenny Roupe. Dancers may wear western or casual attire. For more information, call 740-676-2136.

Collegiate Alumnae

Collegiate Alumnae of Wheeling will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling. After a brief business meeting, site manager Debbie Jones will give a tour of the building. A catered lunch will be served. Reservations are required.

The next four meetings will be held at various locations in the area. Speakers will be Kathie Brown, executive director of Wheeling Health Right, November; Jeanne Finstein with travels in the Holy Land, December; Mary Velez with the Matt Velez Save a Life Campaign, March, and Marilyn Jenkinson at Oglebay's Palm Room, April.

All contributions and annual dues are used for scholarships. Members can attend any or all of the meetings. There is no fundraising. The group is open to women who have at least two years of higher education. For more information, call Marlene Ingram, 304-780-4800.

Coin Club

The Barnesville Coin Club will meet at the Senior Citizens Center, 229 E. Main St., Barnesville, at 2 p.m. next Sunday. Doors will be opened at 12:30 p.m. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Youth can stop by the Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, between 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday to create a Superhero extreme mosaic picture to celebrate Teen Read Week. Limited supplies are available.

Cookie Art Class

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will hold a Halloween cookie art class at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Instructor Catherine Gruda will guide participants through each step in creating mini works of art. All materials will be provided. There is a materials fee. Participants need to bring a tray to take cookies home and an apron or old shirt to protect their clothing.

Big Library Read

Patrons of the Brooke County Public Library may participate this month in the Big Library Read, the world's largest global eBook reading club.

Chelsea Sedoti's debut novel, "The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett," is the featured title for millions of readers around the world to read at the same time beginning Thursday and concluding Oct. 26. Brooke County Library users can borrow the eBook by visiting http://wvreads.overdrive.com/.

Readers can join an online conversation about the book at BigLibraryRead.com. The free program runs for two weeks. To get started reading, all that is needed is a Brooke County library card. The eBook, which can be read on all major computers and devices, will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees.

Lunch & Movie

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will show the film, "47 Meters Down," rated PG-13, at noon Friday. Participants may bring a lunch. Popcorn and water will be provided by the library. To reserve a seat, call the circulation desk, 304-737-1551.

Computer Help

The Follansbee branch of the Brooke County Public Library will offer computer help with resumes and online job applications from 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Library employee Natalie Staffileno will provide help.

Anyone who attends a resume class help session during October or November will be entered to win a tablet with detachable keyboard. A drawing will be held in December.
