Follow the rules, save a life

Changes in the rules about how we approach and drive by traffic incidents have met some success in reducing the number of injuries and fatalities among crash scene responders. But there is still a danger to those whose job is to help. During this Crash Responder Safety Week, Mountain State residents are reminded to move over, slow down, avoid distraction and expect the unexpected. For fire and rescue, emergency medical services, highway maintenance, towing and recovery and public works employees, sticking to those rules could be a life-saver. "Our traffic incident responders answer the ...

Make your vote heard

Today is the day. If you have not already done so, it is time to weigh in on decisions that will affect every level of our government. From our schools and libraries to the U.S. Senate, what is decided today could be felt for years to come. It seems as though the sense of urgency has already taken hold for some, as West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner’s office reported 169,350 early and absentee ballots were cast in the early voting period. That’s an astounding 24% increase over the number of early ballots cast in 2022. And yet, the job has just begun. In Monongalia ...

Americans, at the midterms, are wondering where economy is that Donald Trump promised

It is no great revelation that Donald Trump is enriching himself as president. He raked in $2.2bn in 2025, with his position and his personal interests frequently overlapping. Yet this week’s poll finding that 34% of Republicans (and 66% of all American voters) think that he is using his position to make himself rich merits attention. Mr Trump pledged that people would be better off if they voted for him. Billionaires are; not the ...

Don’t make Halloween scarier than it’s meant to be

Halloween is only a few days away. Trick or treating will be happening all over north-central West Virginia. And while many organizations choose to host trunk-or-treat events as a somewhat safer alternative, there is still nothing quite like roaming the neighborhood in your costume, going from door to door to see who’s handing out the full-sized candy bars. There are real dangers for which parents need to prepare, though. Is the costume going to create a trip hazard? Does it make the child visible, or make them more difficult for drivers to see? Is there any flammable fabric or ...

Social media hazardous to U.S. political landscape

If you’re unlucky enough to be required to spend any time on Elon Musk’s X, as we journalists are, you might well have been dragged through the bombshell investigative report — pardon us, idiotic conspiracy theory — that state Rep. James Talarico was seeking mental health assistance at a hospital in Ohio. Talarico had the flu. His campaign told everyone, including us, he had the flu. It’s flu season. People all over are getting the flu. He shakes hands with lots of people. The story seemed very believable. Alas, his explanation was too pedestrian for the MAGAsphere and its ...
