WINTERSVILLE -- With a year under her belt at the helm of the Redskins and seven returning letterman, Indian Creek girls coach Jackie Rossi is hoping to see improvement from her squad after a nine-win season in her first campaign leading the team a year ago.
"I would say we had an OK season," Rossi. "Our coaching staff took over five days before the first practice so it was a little bit of a learning curve last year for the kids. We were able to have a really nice offseason over the summer. It is a little bit of a different outlook this season just because the coaches and the players are more comfortable with each other now."
The goal Rossi has for her Redskins is simple -- get better every day.
"Right now there is a nice, family feel with this team," Rossi said. "Everybody's goal is just to improve every day. Right now we don't want to look at anything long-term. We are just going to take each game and look at how we did against these teams last year and hopefully have a better outcome this year against them. We go up against a lot of veteran teams this year. Right now it's just about taking it day by day and improving day by day."
Rachel Cooper will be the lone senior on the team, leading five junior returners and one sophomore, as well as a new junior added to the mix.
The plan for Rossi is to have a strong rotation of eight players and have five others split time between varsity and jayvee.
Those five returning juniors are Haylie Scott, Mackenzie Orban, Ashley Yaich, Kacie Vandeborne and Taylor Scott. The added junior is Tera Parrish, with Ally Tweedy being the returning sophomore.
"A lot of this group of juniors have lettered since their freshman year," Rossi said. "Last year was a big learning curve for them because everything was different. It was a different type of system than what they were custom to. These kids work really, really hard and are great kids."
Also at Rossi's disposal will be freshman Abby Copeland, Taylor Jones, Makenzie Taylor, Hailey Clark and Kylie Kiger. Assisting Rossi coaching Creek will be Ron Tweedy, Steve Eft and Tom Mort.
