Special Activities

Advent Procession

The traditional Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols will be presented at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 1410 Chapline St., Wheeling, at 4 p.m. today, Nov. 29. Musical selections by the parish choir and carols will be interspersed with readings by members of the congregation. A wassail reception will be held in the parish hall after the service. The program is free and open to the public.

Ohio County CEOS

The Ohio County Community Educational Outreach Service will meet at the Valley Grove community building at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30. Nancy Kish, county president, will convene the meeting. The agenda will include final plans for a county Christmas party. Club reports are due to county chairmen and club membership dues are to be paid.

Club representatives who are unable to attend the meeting are to send alternate delegates.

Ladies League

The Ladies League of Marshall County will meet in the Kubic Room at the McMechen city building at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30. Hostesses will be Vicki Allender, Sheila Blackmore, Arica Holt, Christy Kirby, Elaine McCreary, Marian Moore, Ruth Mozingo, Bethani Vilkoski, Phyllis Wharton and Dana Zambito.

Members are to bring books to be given to kindergarten students at Center McMechen and All Saints Elementary schools. Attendees also are asked to donate dimes for a backpack ministry, Campbell’s soup labels, Box Tops for Education, unused coupons, used printer cartridges and aluminum pull tabs.

Reservations for a Dec. 14 Christmas party at Moundsville Country Club will be taken. Dues, raffle tickets and money will be collected.

Book Talk

Local author Susan Jones will present her book, “Bill Stewart: In His Own Words,” at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30. The brief book talk will include an appearance by Karen Stewart, wife of the late coach. The event is free and open to the public.

Copies of the book and other works by Jones will be available for purchase and signing.

Lunch With Books

West Virginia author Anna Egan Smucker will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, Dec. 1, to discuss her new children’s book, “Brother Giovanni’s Little Reward, How the Pretzel Was Born.”

She will examine the process of creating a children’s picture book and will talk about her other books.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are provided.

Alpha Pi Sigma

Gamma chapter of Alpha Pi Sigma sorority will meet at the Martins Ferry Public Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, with president Darlene Ruch presiding.

Christmas Sing-Along

An old-fashioned Christmas sing-along will take place at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, and at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library, 201 Marshall St., McMechen, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8. Both events will feature music by Wesley Howsare and will last about an hour. Santa Claus will visit.

The programs for all ages are free and open to the public, with holiday treats included. The events are co-sponsored by the Robert Baker family with cookies provided by the Ladies League of Marshall County.

Lessons, Carols

The Schola Cantorum Franciscana and the Franciscan University Chorale will present an Advent Service of Nine Lessons and Carols in Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University of Steubenville at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The schola and chorale, directed by professors Nicholas Will and George Melhorn, respectively, will perform multiple musical pieces and lead the congregation in Advent and Christmas carols and hymns. The service is free and open to the public.

Christmas Concerts

Wheeling Jesuit University’s Chamber Singers, under the direction of Robert Troeger, will hold its free Christmas concert at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1225 National Road, Wheeling, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.

The River City Brass Band of Pittsburgh along with the WJU symphonic band and new a cappella group will hold a free concert at Wheeling Jesuit’s Troy Theater at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Dr. James Gourlay will lead the band.

The university will hold a blessing and lighting of a Christmas tree in the CET Circle immediately after the 8 p.m. Mass on Sunday, Dec. 6. Carols will be led by the WJU Chamber Singers.

Advent Evening

An Advent Evening by the Fire will be held at St. Joseph Retreat Center, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3. Light refreshments will be served.

Museum Event

A double event will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Ohio Valley River Museum, 112 Ferry St., Clarington. Santa and an elf will be at the museum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with photographer Beverly Dierkes. The Rev. Randall Gehres, former pastor of the Zion and Immanuel United Church of Christ congregations, will be at the museum to offer his book, “Meanderings with Grace,” for sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

After this event, the museum will be closed through March for updating and rearranging exhibits.

Garden Club

The Mount Pleasant Garden Club will meet at the Farm Restaurant at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, for a Christmas party. A gift exchange will be held.

Lunch With Books

California University of Pennsylvania students of Christina Fisanick will be at a special edition of Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Saturday, Dec. 5, to debut their digital video stories focusing on local history. The event is in partnership with the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.

Craft Fair, Parade

The Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce is presenting a Christmas craft fair in the Barnesville Elementary School gym, 210 W. Church St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. Barnesville’s Christmas parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. After the parade, Santa will visit with children at the elementary school gym.

Concert

A free concert featuring the Ron Retzer Trio will be held at Stone Presbyterian Church, 25 E. Cove Ave., Wheeling, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. A cookie and coffee reception will begin at 1:30 p.m. A love offering will be collected to support the trio’s music ministry.

Christmas Concert

The Opus Music Club of Moundsville will present a Christmas concert at First Christian Church, Third Street and Grant Avenue, Moundsville, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Admission is free.

Musical Program

Film Showing

Preservation Alliance

Allen Dieterich-Ward, history professor at Shippensburg University, will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, Nov. 24, to discuss his new book, “Beyond Rust: Metropolitan Pittsburgh and the Fate of Industrial America.”

The book chronicles the rise, fall and rebirth of an industrial region that once formed the heart of the world’s steel production and is now touted as a model for reviving other hard-hit cities of the Rust Belt.

National Trail Stitchers

Native American

Program

A special program will be presented at Brooke County Museum, 704 Charles St., Wellsburg, from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29.

Christian Allen, a Native American from Latrobe, Pa., will return to speak on the subject of childhood and history of Shawnee life. He also will offer explanatory information about artifacts in the county museum’s collection. Attendees may bring Native American items for review. The program will include Native American music recorded by Aaron Carey of Wellsburg.

Spirituality for Mothers

Kelly Reindel-Swan and Kate Marshall will lead a session, “A Divine Spark: Spirituality for Mothers,” at St. Joseph Retreat Center, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30. There is a cost for the session.

Mothers will explore spirituality from a creative perspective, through art, prayer, words and discussion. Sessions are open to mothers with children of all ages and of all faith backgrounds.

Christmas on the Avenue

Christmas on the Avenue activities will be held on Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.

Activities will include horse-drawn carriage rides from 1-6 p.m., face painting and a Christmas train ride from 3-6 p.m., a visit with Santa at the former Remke’s Helping Hands building, music by Stevie Lynn in the BB&T parking lot from 5-6 p.m. and lighting of a 20-foot Christmas tree at 6 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Uptown Moundsville Activities Committee.

Victorian Christmas Tea

The Belmont County Historical Society will present a Christmas tea Friday, Dec. 4, at the Belmont County Victorian Mansion Museum, 532 N. Chestnut St., Barnesville. Seatings for the tea will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Admission is charged. The museum tour fee is extra.

Light Up Night

Bethany College will hold its fifth annual Light Up Night in Commencement Hall at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3.

The free event will begin with a tree lighting and continue with an auction of trees and wreaths decorated in holiday themes.

All proceeds from the event will go to Bernie’s Kids. The charity, named in honor of the late Brooke County sheriff and commissioner Bernie Kazienko, provides Christmas presents for county children in need.

Santa Claus will make an appearance and pose for pictures with children. Children can write and decorate a letter to Santa. Refreshments will be provided.

AARP

Greater Wheeling Area Chapter 824 of AARP will hold a luncheon meeting at Wheeling Park’s White Palace at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Members who have made reservations and need to cancel must call Lohr today or they will be charged for the luncheon.

West Liberty Federated Church will have a soup and sandwich sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Carry-out orders also will be available. Five varieties of sandwiches, five soups and homemade desserts will be offered.

Eastern Star

Miriam Chapter 1, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at Monument Place, Kruger Street, Wheeling, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Sharon Cronin, worthy matron, and Jim Daily, worthy patron, will preside.

A covered-dish dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Turkey and dessert will be provided. Carrie Cronin and Bill Wheat be hosts for a social hour after the meeting. The chapter will collect fruit cups for a backpack project at this meeting.

Genealogical Society

The Wheeling Area Genealogical Society will meet at the Ohio County Public Library auditorium, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Jeanne Finstein will speak on “Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover During the Civil War.”

The presentation will focus on the lives of four women who had widely different roles during the war: Emma Edmonds, alias Frank Thompson; abolitionist Elizabeth Van Lew; Belle Boyd, who lived in the Eastern Panhandle, and Rose Greenhow, whose Washington prison also housed Wheeling’s Confederate spy, Ellie Poole.

Junior Women’s Club

The Barnesville Junior Women’s Club will meet at First United Methodist Church, Barnesville, for a Thanksgiving dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Members are to bring a covered dish. Meat, drinks and place settings will be provided. After dinner, Staci Stephen, director of development at Augusta Levy Learning Center, will speak on the learning center and autism.

Lecture

As part of the annual Civil War program at Historic Fort Steuben, historian Roger Micker will present a lecture on abolitionist John Brown in the Fort Steuben Visitor Center in Steubenville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Native American Lecture

Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, 801 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, will celebrate Native American Month with a program titled “Guyasuta: Defender of the Ohio River Valley” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Award-winning historian and author Brady J. Crytzer will present the program. He will conduct a book signing after his lecture. The event is free and open to the public.

Crytzer will delve into the details of the Native American culture of the Ohio River Valley to explain the leadership role that Guyasuta played in the area. The Seneca chief was one of the primary diplomats and warriors of the valley.

A specialist in North American imperialism, Crytzer is the author of four books and teaches history at Robert Morris University.

Holiday Event

An event, Homemade for the Holidays, will be held at Ruble United Methodist Church, 37 Ruby Ave., Wheeling, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Lunch will be available. Homemade soups, baked goods and spaghetti sauce will be sold.

Holiday Bazaar

Taize Prayer

Dance

Organ-Choral Vespers

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 1410 Chapline St., Wheeling, will present All Saints’ Day Organ and Choral Vespers at 4 p.m. today, Nov. 1. The service is open to the public.

The parish choir will sing Louis Vierne’s Solemn Mass. Guest organist will be Douglas Marshall, co-designer of the new Marshall and Ogletree Opus 10 organ that has been installed in the church.

Writer’s Forum

A Writer’s Forum, which will offer an opportunity to meet four published authors to learn what it takes to get a book written and published, will be held from 2-4 p.m. today, Nov. 1, at the New Martinsville campus of West Virginia Northern Community College.

Participating writers are Debbie Ice, the Rev. Dr. Vic Hunter, Cheryl Shank and Chuck Clegg. Their work represents fiction, nonfiction and children’s books.

Ohio County CEOS

The Ohio County Community Educational Outreach Service will hold a leadership and awards day at the Valley Grove community building Monday, Nov. 2. The theme is “Strengthen, Build and Support.”

Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. A program, beginning at 10 a.m., will honor members’ accomplishments for the year and highlight service within the organization. Patricia Flanigan, director of the YWCA Wheeling’s Family Violence Prevention Program, will be the guest speaker. The CEOS members will be collecting personal hygiene products and donating to the program.

Leadership meetings will be conducted with the county and club chairmen for the various committees’ 2016 plan of action. Each member will bring a covered dish for a potluck lunch. Membership information will be available at Monday’s program.
