WHEELING -- Pressure washers, shovels and more are getting a workout again Friday morning in several Ohio County communities following Thursday evening’s torrential rain and flash flooding in our region. The National Weather Service said more than 2 inches of rain fell in a short span.

The Elm Terrace Shopping Center and surrounding Elm Terrace neighborhood were among the hardest hit, with mud caking the parking lot at the shopping center and businesses inundated with water and muck. Residents living nearby were out this morning removing items from their basements, damaged from water and mud.

National Road through Elm Grove remains muddy in areas, particularly near Easterseals Rehabilitation Center heading west. The road also is covered with mud near CVS.

East Bethlehem Boulevard is open this morning after being closed much of Thursday evening due to high water down the hill from the Char House, toward Elm Grove. And 29th Street coming the other direction from Bethlehem into the Center/South Wheeling neighborhood remained a mess Friday morning after the run there quickly exited its banks and covered 29th Street near Dugger’s Market, the Silver Rail and Pizza Villa.

There’s also reported damage in Benwood as parts of Benwood Hill turned into a mudpit and slips closed the road in several areas.

No injuries have been reported. Thursday’s flooding came 12 days after flash flooding in the Valley Grove/Triadelphia communities claimed nine lives.

Starting at /week.
