WHEELING - West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday $500,000 is now available to flood victims in Ohio and Marion counties needing housing assistance.
Morrisey provided a flood relief effort update Wednesday in Wheeling, noting that survey information indicates at least 34 homes were destroyed during June 14 flash flooding, primarily in the Valley Grove and Triadelphia areas of Ohio County.
"A lot of people are going to be out of their homes for a very long time," Morrisey said. "The rebuilding is going to take some time. But it is important that people have housing, and there are opportunities for that to get the assistance they need."
Morrisey reported those overseeing the State Housing Development Fund have approved his request to make over $500,000 available to assist individuals and families who lost their housing during the floods.
The money could cover any housing-related expenditures incurred by the residents due to the flooding, including security deposits, rent costs or other housing expenses, according to Morrisey.
"It is meant to provide some help,"he continued. "I hope that is going to be a boost to help this area. A lot more resources are going to be needed, but with respect to housing we want to make sure we are on top of it."
The money will be available to those affected though September, Morrisey said.

"I know we can never fully replace a home that was hit by the floods, or the personal items," Morrisey said. "The lives of everyone have been changed forever.
"But we know that there is strength, resiliency, courage and love in Ohio County, and we want to praise that," he said.
