It’s Race Day in Downtown Wheeling

3 min read

Runners, walkers, dog owners and urban challenge conquerors taking part in the events that make up the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine have every reason to be proud of themselves. Simply being prepared mentally and physically to challenge the grueling race course, or to tackle the obstacles arranged through downtown and East Wheeling, is a notable achievement.

Competing in these events is a highly personal thing. Do well, and you can pat yourself on the back.

Don't do as well as you had hoped, and you know you will have to work harder next time.

But staging the many race-weekend events is a team effort. No individual, not even a small group of them, can pull it off.

Volunteers are the backbone of the race. Without scores of them taking on often difficult, thankless tasks, the event would not be possible. Their efforts are why some racers come back to Wheeling, year after year.

Sponsors are absolutely vital to the event. As they do so often, their goal is simply to accomplish something good for the community.

Finally, local residents and business people who assist competitors in many ways, ranging from cheering on a runner who could use a lift to ensuring competitors get good value for their visitor dollars, have ensured the Ogden Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine has a welcoming environment that means much to those participating.

It really is a team effort. And in Wheeling, we are fortunate that the team is a very big one. Without it, holding the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic, the 5K Run & Walk for Health, the Tiny Tot Trot and Ogden Fun Run (both presented by WVU Medicine Children's), the new Rovers on the River event presented by Play N Stay Pet Camp and then, on Sunday, the Tough as Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan, would not be possible. Get out this weekend and support those running, walking, climbing and also those taking part in the Wheeling Heritage Trail Partners Bicycle Tour on Sunday morning.

And don't forget, following each day's events there will still be opportunities for fellowship for participants and the public, with a DJ on Saturday and the band The Vindys performing on Sunday near Heritage Port.

The Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine continues to grow, thanks to the help of so many. Join us for the celebration and support those who participate.
