In a week, thousands of people will pack downtown Wheeling as they help kick off the summer season in the Ohio Valley by taking part in the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine.
For two days, they will be there to run, walk, climb -- or cheer the runners, walkers and climbers on -- and have a good time, all in the name of physical fitness.
For those who have not yet signed up, there's still time. And there are plenty of events to join.
Runners and walkers are gearing up for the big race, the 47th running of the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic set for Saturday, May 24. That same day, many more will participate in the 5K Run and 5K Walk, both presented by WVU Medicine Children's Hospital.
Our younger residents will get a chance to participate with the 1-mile Ogden Fun Run and the mad dash of the Tiny Tot Trot, both presented by WVU Medicine Children's.
This year, there is even a chance for four-legged athletes to join the fun with the addition of the Rovers on the River event, presented by Play N Stay Pet Camp. It provides a chance for dogs and their people to traverse an obstacle course along the Ohio River.
Sunday, May 25, will feature the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan, where urban warriors will take on various obstacles around the Friendly City, many of which take their nods from Wheeling history. That begins at noon.
Earlier on Sunday, the Wheeling Heritage Trail Partners Bicycle Tour will take riders along the Ohio River, with some going deep into Ohio County. The event features rides of 15, 50 and 100 kilometers.
When all that activity comes to an end, there will still be opportunities for fellowship for participants and the public, with a DJ on Saturday and the band The Vindys performing on Sunday near Heritage Port.
And while participants will be treated to free water and snacks to help them recover, other who attend the activities downtown and around Heritage Port will have a variety of food trucks to choose from.
The Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine continues to grow, thanks to the help of so many -- the volunteers who make it go, the generous sponsors whose contributions keep the weekend rolling, the city of Wheeling and its crucial help.
We especially thank the people of the Ohio Valley who attend the event year after year. This weekend is an event that doesn't happen everywhere, and it's that continued support that allows the event to remain a jewel of Wheeling.
We thank you all for that help and that spirit. Please help keep the momentum going. Join us for the celebration and support those who participate.
