Students Excel in Social Studies; Golf; and Star Wars

The West Virginia Department of Education hosted more than 500 students in Charleston recently as part of the 2024 State Social Studies Fair. Division I consisted of Elementary Students in Grades 3 -5 while Division II was for students in Grades 3-8. Marshall County School had nine students earn first place, three second place, nine students placed third and five students honorable mention.

First place winners were (Division I) Aubree Gatts, Addilyn Ellwood and Maya Laudermilk. Division II first place winners were Chloe Pickett, Braxton Haught, Abby Allman, and Gracylynn Welch. Second place winners were Megan Marling and Jersey Schafer (Division I) and Ava Hill (Division II). Third Place Division I winners were Colton Scherich, Camden Hill, Delaney Doty, and Arya Ripley, while Colsen McCutcheon, Adah Aubrey, Emily Gatts, Carter Robbins, and Carson Sauriol placed third in Division II. Honorable Mentions were awarded to River Dolin, Keylee Robbins, Jaxon Burge and Maddox Frye in Division I, and John Hunnel, Maddox Shipley and Jessalyn Twarog in Division II.

The Ohio Valley Mall hosted a Champions Rally Wednesday afternoon to honor the Cameron High School girls basketball team. The Lady Dragons won the West Virginia Class A state championship three years in a row. The Cafaro Foundation donated $10,000 to the school and also gave each team member a mall gift card.

The 10th annual Baking for Hope Bingo sponsored by Team Limestone for Angels and Survivors will be held at the Limestone Community Building today (April 13). The doors will open at noon for lunch. Game prizes are home baked foods in reusable containers, and a coverall prize worth over $200. The event supports the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The John Marshall Golf staff along with the Marshall County Middle School golf coaches will be hosting a golf clinic for boys and girls entering grades 6-9 and a program for high school students who would like to play golf. The event is hosted by Moundsville County Club, Oglebay Park and Brooke Hill Park and will begin on May 14. Two of the sessions will be held at the Moundsville County Club, where the players will work on the driving range as well as chipping and putting. There will be two days on the driving range at Oglebay. The program will conclude on May 31st with a day-long golf camp at Brooke Hill Park. Participants will be required to have some golf clubs, including a putter, that they will bring and use at the camp.

"Over the past several years the John Marshall Golf Program has become the one of the largest and most unique programs in West Virginia with the opportunity for young people to learn to play and enjoy the lifelong sport and some also compete on the highest level during the fall season as well as in the summer," JMHS Head Coach David Gaudio said. "We now also have competitive middle school teams that have also been very successful."

The Marshall County Spring Clean-up gets underway today (Saturday) at three location -- Big Wheeling Creek, Sherrard, and Limestone. All Marshall County residents are welcome to use the sites. Dumpsters will be avaiblabe at the Limestone Volunteer Fire Department and Sherrard Middle School.

A Star Wars Movie Event will take place at 7 p.m. May 4 -- hence, "May the Fourth be With You" -- at the Strand Theatre. Admission will be $7, however those in Star Wars apparel will get in for $5. Doors will open 30 minutes prior and tickets for the show are available at the door.
