Marshall Memo: Hefty County Budget; Community Night; and Fundraisers

The Marshall County Commission on Wednesday adopted the Fiscal Year 2025 levy for submission to the West Virginia Auditor's Office. The county's budget for the coming year is set at $47.9 million, with an additional $5.1 million in coal severance.

"We believe this budget serves the needs of our elected officials so that they may operate their offices in an efficient manner," Commission President Mike Ferro said. "We also believe we have projected sufficiently for potential increases in the cost of insurance, regional jail expenses, and fuel for vehicles--all of which are major expenses.

"We are able to assist with water and sewer projects as well as capital improvements. In addition, we are fortunate to be able to contribute to the funding of many outside agencies who provide great services to our citizens."

Monarch Stadium Community Night will return on April 7. The public is invited to use the track and field at Monarch Stadium every Sunday in April and May from 4-7 p.m. No pets are permitted.

Cameron High School's indoor track is open to the public every Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Please enter the back of the school using door 23. No pets are permitted.

The Marshall County History Museum located at 301 13th St. in Moundsville is holding its Open House today (March 30.) There will be a special display to honor the Museum's 2024 History Hero Gene Gray.

The former West Virginia Penitentiary will reopen on Tuesday for the 2024 season. The hours for tours will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Fostoria Glass Society of America located at 511 Tomlinson Ave. is now open from 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital offers cancer support groups for survivors and caretakers at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of every month in the Bebbe-Habig Room. Groups includes: Women's Support, Men's Support, Survivorship Program, and Educational Program.

The Moundsville Lions Club will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. April 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Moundsville. Takeout, dine-in, and delivery are available and the cost is $10 for adults and $7 for those under 10 years old.

Tickets for the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Ladies Luncheon are on sale now for $25. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. April 18. The theme is "Women Wear Many Hats" featuring Mary Laska, Dr. Shelby Haines, and Ronna-Renee Jackson

The Marshall County Chamber of Commerce will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to Marshall County students. The general scholarship will be awarded based on academics, community involvement, an essay and extracurricular activities. The Tech-Nine Scholarship will be awarded to a student in one of the following areas: Agriculture Education, Auto Collision Repair, Auto Tech, Computer Repair, Drafting, Machine Tool Tech, ProStart, Vocational Agriculture, or Welding Technology.

At the most recent school board meeting, resignation of three coaches were approved. Shawna Zervos resigned as assistant cross country coach at John Marshall High School, effective March 14th. Robert Wilson and Theodore Zervos resigned as wrestling coaches at Sherrard Middle School, effective March 20th.
