A team from John Marshall High School won the 2024 West Virginia LifeSmarts Championship, which means they will travel to California next month to compete for the 2024 Life Smarts Varsity Team National Title. The JMHS LifeSmarts team includes: Alina Holliday, Maria Huck, Jasper Murrin, and Ethan Pekula. They are coached by Business Teacher Megan Pintus. With the state competition win, the team qualified for the 30th LifeSmarts Championship to be held April 18-21 in San Diego. Fifty teams will be taking part. John Marshall teams have been competing at the national championship for six consecutive years. JMHS finished eighth last year. Life Smarts is a consumer education and life skills competition that challenges teens in grades 6-8 (junior varsity) and 9-12 (varsity) about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and workforce preparation, and consumer rights and responsibilities. LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League.

Marshall County Board of Education members this past week voted unanimously to award the architect and engineering bid to Omni Associates-Architects Inc. for the John Marshall High School Natatorium. Omni is a West Virginia firm with four architects on staff. The aquatics specialist for Omni will be Counsilman-Hunsaker Aquatics for Life, which has provided design and operational consulting for thousands of national and international aquatics projects for the past 50 years. The next step in the project will be solidifying the design. The Natatorium will be located in the north-west side of the current parking area.
Generators for Cameron High School and Cameron Elementary school have been delivered and placed on site. They are scheduled to be up and running by the start of the new school year in August.
The Cameron High School Queen of Queens pageant was held this past Sunday with Caitlyn Conner, Kendra Cottrell, and Brenna Riggle competing in the three categories of evening gown, interview, and talent. Cottrell was crowned queen and will competed in the OVAC Queen of Queens Pageants in July. In the talent round, she worked with her dog, Banjo, in a Canine Freestyle Routine. Riggle was awarded Miss Congeniality.

The film "Nova: Eclipse over America" will be shown at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today (March 23) at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville. Those seeing this film will find out more about the upcoming eclipse. The film is approximately 1 hour long.

The City of Moundsville Stormwater Department will be sponsoring a litter clean-up from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. April 20. City Manager Rick Healy informed council members at Tuesday's meeting that the event now has an official name. Due to the untimely death of Todd Hager, his family has agreed to allow this annual event to be called the Todd Hager Litter Clean-Up. Healy said, "Todd was instrumental in the clean-up event getting started last year". This year's area to be concentrated on is DOT Drive and the surrounding area behind Kroger.
The city manager also stated that a Moundsville family was the recipient of a free roof award by Saints Roofing and Construction of Wheeling. The company has a yearly contest to help a family in need, and this year's winner is Mike Miller and family of 7th Street.
There was one appointment to the Historic Landmarks Commissio. Danielle Harmon has expressed an interest in services, and with her employment in the Building Inspections Department, this will be a great tie-in for the Commission. This will be beneficial with the new OnTrac Program.
