Time To Clam Up And Listen

By Heather Ziegler 3 min read

I don't know whether to be happy or sad after watching some of the Academy Awards show last week. I really just tuned in to see what outrageous outfits would appear on the red carpet.

I find it intriguing what Hollywood's elite considers high fashion in both women's and men's formal wear. That's pretty much the extent of any pleasure in watching such "awards" shows.

To be fair, I preface my thoughts on the fact that I did not see any of the movies that were up for awards. I'm not sure what kept me from the movie theater over the past year. Perhaps it was reading reviews of the movies that told me I wouldn't be interested in shelling out good money for bad plots or acting. Or maybe the cost of a snack and a drink at the theater would set back my weekly food budget.

Anyway, from the snippets of the Academy show that I saw, it quickly became obvious that the once-glamorous and respectful program had turned dark with people-slamming jokes and political jabs. I don't know why anyone in Hollywood would put themselves through that kind of humiliation from a comedic want-a-be host.

That seems to be the trend in public appearances of all kinds. Whether it's politicians at a rally or even clergy members in a sacred space, no one is off limits to hecklers and disruptors.

It appears that the 2024 election season is bringing out the worst in such behavior from not only the public but the candidates as well.

I do not look forward to the many months before the November elections. Already I am wanting the rhetoric and name bashing to go away, yet I know it's only going to escalate. I wish the candidates for all the various positions would simply pay attention to the important issues at hand. And if they do pay attention, give us some realistic and doable solutions, not just lip service.

Somehow those things we voters are hoping will improve or change are lost on those running for office. In between all those speeches and political ads, it would be nice if candidates would quit talking and start listening.

Maybe then we as voters would be willing to roll out the red, white and blue carpet.
