Marshall Memo: Crowning the Queen; Wall of Fame; and Writers

Congratulations to Lauren Rice who was named the 2024 JMHS Queen of Queens at a ceremony held at John Marshall High School Thursday. Victoria Henry was named First Runner Up while Amelia Kaste was Second Runner Up. Annadra Dudley was voted Miss Congeniality.

The John Marshall High School Wall of Fame Committee will hold its 18th annual banquet and induction ceremony on Saturday, March 16 at JMHS. Donald Kirsch, Jeffrey Lilley, and Greg Steele will be the inductees. They will be recognized for their accomplishments and dedication to community with a dinner among friends and family, and a plaque presented to be displayed on the JMHS Wall of Fame. The committee invites anyone who wishes to celebrate these individuals to join them in the main commons of John Marshall for the event. RSVP and payment of $30 per per-son is due by Friday, March 8. As to those being honored, Kirsch was a member of the class of 1975. His only employer has been The Welty Home for the Aged in Wheeling. He started his career as the business manager in 1979, and he was promoted to the administrator in 1981, and the manager for the Welty Corp. in 1993. He has been the supervisor of approximately $43.5 million in construction projects at the facility between 1984 and 2015.

Lilley is a 1984 graduate and resides in Athens, West Virginia, where he is the CEO at Princeton Community Hospital. He has a bachelor's degree from West Liberty University and a master's in Healthcare Administration from St. Joseph College of Maine. He has served as a board member of the WV Health Services Board, WVHA Medicaid Task Force, Partners in Healthcare, and New River Community College Advisory Committee.

Steele is a resident of Castaic, California who studied music at the University of Kentucky and West Virginia University. During his career he has worked on over 1,000 feature films in post-production sound. He has bene involved with multiple Oscar wining best films and has received multiple golden reel awards. Greg is a retired Automated Dialogue Replacement mixer. Prior to working on sound in feature films and television he worked as a professional musician. Steele credits band director the late Ron Rose as being a key part to his successful career.

The 2024 Marshall County Young Writers Contest has been released and each of the original stories will be printed in the 2024 Marshal County Young Writers Anthology. The student authors will read their one-of-a kind narratives during the annual Young Writers Tea on March 5th at JMHS. The stories of students who placed first in the county were submitted to the West Virginia Young Writers Contest. Additionally, all Marshall County first-place entries will be recognized during a celebration on May 3 at the West Virginia Young Writes day at the University of Charleston.

The contest was divided into five divisions; first and second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, seventh and eighth grade, and ninth and tenth grade. First places winners are: Josephine Murrin (Sand Hill) "My Fun Family"; Khlya Bettinazzi (Glen Dale) "Drift"; Harmony Goddard (Sherrard Middle) "I Love You"; Isolde Dougherty (Sherrard Middle) "Moonless Night"; and Ryan Schrack (Cameron High) "The Lookout Tower.

Marshall County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Business Health Expo on March 1-2 at the Moundsville Center.
