Marshall Memo: New School; Counselors; Jay Jacobs; and Updates

3 min read

Another step toward a new Benwood-McMechen school took place when Gov. Jim Justice arrived this past Thursday with $9.2 million. It was in June 2021 that Marshall County Schools purchased the land for $1.2 million with hopes of building on the property. The field that was purchased was for many years called Ice House Field. That name was from a former owner, the B&O Railroad. It previously served as a baseball field and the home team was the Bud Roys. One of the major reason that the school system wanted to build on this lot was that students wouldn't have to cross Marshall Street in the downtown area.

Jenna Dompa, former Central Elementary and current Sherrard Middle School counselor, represented Marshall County Schools and the Mountain State in Washington, D.C. as the American School Counseling Association West Virginia Elementary Counselor of the Year. She joined the nation's top school counselors who were honored at the Feb. 1 gala. The ASCA lauded the hard work of schools counseling professionals and their dedication to making a difference in every student's life. Also during her time in the nation's Capital, Dompa met with personnel from the U.S. Department of Education for discussions on various topics such as civil rights, special education, CTE and mental health.

Several events are taking place at the Grave Creek Mound Archeological Complex in Moundsville this month. A 31-page budget document from this past year was presented by Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy during the past week's meeting. The document is available for reading at the Moundsville Public Library. Healy thanked department heads for submitting information on time and for Secretary Sara Jasenec for her work on the project.

The Marshall County Commission on Wednesday approved two contributions totaling $8,900. Relay for Life received $2,900 and the Cinderella Project sponsored by the Ladies League of Marshall County received $6,000. They also approved a contribution to the Greater Moundsville Convention and Visitor's Bureau for $35,000 to assist in covering costs associated with three large trade shows.

In other matters, the Democrat and Republican Executive committees sent in their nominations for the 2024 Primary and General Elections. Arthur "Sonny" Oakland was nominated by the Democrat Party while Kathy Jefferson was nominated by the Republication Party.

Two large on-going construction projects were also discussed. The commission received an updated completion date from general contractor SQP of March 18, 2024 for the Courthouse Project. Greacon is still on schedule to have the New Health Department building completed in August.

You might have heard recently that Jay Jacobs has retired as a radio-television broadcaster for West Virginia University basketball. Some people might remember that he was a head coach at Union High School years ago. While he was coaching in the Ohio Valley, he lived on Virginia Street in Moundsville.

It's hard to believe but the Pittsburgh Pirate pitchers and catchers will be reporting for the 2024 season on Feb. 13. The first official full squad workouts will be Feb. 19 with the first spring training game slated for Feb. 24.
