To the extent that Bishop Mark Brennan's Jan. 2 commentary on the bloodshed in Gaza says anything unequivocally, it betrays obscene casuistry. "The charge of genocide is false," Brennan declares, because Israel is slaughtering Palestinians only in Gaza, not in the other regions of Palestine it stole. This vicious and absurd stipulation would not even stand up in court; the United Nations' genocide convention defines genocidal acts as those targeting national, ethnic, racial or religious groups "in whole or in part." The forcible transfer of Gazans to Egypt, which Brennan goes on to advocate as a peaceful resolution, also constitutes genocide under the convention.
