This past year, the Strand Theatre in Moundsville was highlighted with programming opportunities, facility upgrades and continued community collaborations resulting in over 4,500 attending events there. The Strand benefited from numerous safety upgrades to the fly space above the stage, and this means that the safety of performers, technicians, and patrons is set for the future. The Theatre continued to build and strengthen community connections by partnering with organizations such as the Marshall County Public Library, City of Moundville's Arts and Culture Commission and the Cockayne Farmstead. More than 30 events have been lined up for 2024: For the first quarter of the year the programs include: Jan. 12 - A turn to Stone: A Tribute to Elo (7 p.m.); Feb. 9 - Create with MACC: Ballroom Dance Class (6-7 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m.) Feb. 10 - Ron Retzer Trio Valentine Show (7 p.m.); Feb. 17 - Raise the Arena Fundraiser Concert featuring Dave Mayfield and Crandall Creek (7 p.m.); Also on Feb. 17 Spring Children's Acting Classes will begin. On March 18, the Marshall County Historical Society Annual Banquet will be held starting at 5 p.m., and on March 23 the Spring Children's Acting Classes will end.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life invites the community to this year's Relay Rally Kickoff from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Moundsville First Christian Church. Izzy's Food Truck will be on site. As to the event, it will take place on the evening of May 31 in the John Marshall High School North Parking lot. The theme this year is "Back to the Future – Cancer Free." There are 12 teams already organized to support his undertaking; however, there is no limit to the number of teams that can participate. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society for research, education, prevention, and patient support. A virtual Teen Peer Support Group started this past Thursday and will continue on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in January and February. Ages for the sessions are 13-17 and attendees must have parental consent and follow group rules including respect, appropriate language, and privacy. Beginning Tuesday, Marshall County Schools will begin 2024-2025 Pre-K registration for children who turn 4 before July 1, 2024. If a parent wishes to enroll a child in Pre-K, please call the school in their area on or after Jan. 9 to make an appointment and pick-up a registration packet. You can also request a packet to be mailed. The application is also available on the Marshall County Schools website boe.mars.k12.wv.us. For Moundsville area sites, call McNinch Primary to register. Those who reside in Limestone, Sand Hill or Sherrard, please contact Hilltop to register, and for the PLAYS Child Care Center contact Washington Lands Elementary. WV Pre-K programs are free for any child that turns 4 prior to July 1, 2024. For children turning 5 by July 1, 2024 they can be registered to attend Kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year. For children already attending a Marshall County Pre-k program, they do not have to register. For those children not currently enrolled, beginning on Tuesday January 9th, appointments can be scheduled for kindergarten screening and registration.
At the appointment, a health screening and brief readiness test will be given.
