Sadly, the prospects of maintaining a Democratic majority in the United States Senate have dimmed with the announcement by incumbent Joe Manchin that he will retire at the conclusion of his current term.
In a state that is highly supportive of the thug/insurrection leader and friend to white supremacists, former President Donald Trump, it is now all but certain that Republican Senate candidate Jim Justice will be elected and will follow the extreme wing of the GOP in being loyal to and afraid of Trump.
This is a Republican Party that does not believe in accepting the legitimate result of elections that it loses, and which believes that a raging criminal mob that desecrates the Capitol and beats law enforcement officers is engaging in ordinary political discourse.
Joe Manchin often frustrated his party through his conservative and independent streak, but in multiple situations, he has been there for the Democrats when it counted, including what was unthinkable for many Trump-loving West Virginians, voting to impeach Trump.
I wish Joe Manchin well in retirement. He did not always please me throughout his Senate years, but I will miss him.
