We all know the proliferation of deer in our area has been an ongoing concern. These animals, while beautiful, have changed the way we plant our gardens and drive our roads. One can only imagine the challenges of Oglebay Park. For years, the deer herd has multiplied. Now the park administration has faced the task of getting the land and deer population in sync with the recent decision to cull the numbers, work with professionals to study the problem and oversee the process.
This can only be for the good, for both the land and the animals. The deer eat all the little saplings of the re-populating trees, which can have dire consequences for future tree growth. The animals themselves can become undernourished and prone to disease if not able to be sustained on the land available. So I give the powers-that-be at the park credit for taking on this complicated problem.
It is a necessary step in the right direction.
