Not Yet

Okay, so July Fourth has come and gone. The fireworks have been put away until Labor Day. But don't pack up those picnic baskets and lawn chairs just yet.

Despite what my dad used to say that summer was over as the July Fourth barbecue cooled off, the season has hardly begun.

Yes, I know kids go back to school in August (never liked that). I understand the stores are promoting back-to-school sales. I also know that the summers as we once knew them in the Ohio Valley got a late start.

The weather up until now has been cooler with little need for the air conditioner. Open windows at night gave way to a restful sleep. Now it's time to get serious about summertime pursuits.

It's time to get to a local swimming pool and lather up in something with a coconut scent. I've yet to take in an outdoor concert this season but vow to get to one of the many free events offered in this grand valley.

The outdoor Friday fun nights at Wheeling Park are already a big hit judging by the crowds I have seen gathered around the lake area. There is definitely something for all ages at this event.

First Friday programming has made a return in many communities including at the Centre Market. These always draw a crowd with live music and dancing in the street.

I hear the Dairy Queen is offering some unique summer-inspired treats including s'more blizzards and cotton candy themed dip cones. Not sure I'm up for that much sweetness but a good-old vanilla cone is in my future.

The farmers' markets are in full swing and soon there will be sweet corn and red tomatoes for a summer feast.

The weather has not permitted an even tanning of these glow-in-the-dark white arms and legs, but I am working on my farmer's tan as I cut grass.

I'm happy to report that in spite of our trimming down our rose bushes, they have come back in regal splendor much to the delight of the hummingbirds who hang out among them.

Usually the summer months include some blockbuster movies at the local theaters so I will be keeping an eye out for something that might prompt me to leave the TV offerings for a big-screen story.

And if the evenings continue to bring cooler temps, we will break out the fire pit and roast some marshmallows or hot dogs.

If rain threatens, we can throw up the garage door and sit under cover and watch the storms roll in from the safety of the garage.

So even if the days continue to get short on daylight, don't despair. There is plenty yet to do before a real chill is in the air. Let's do it!
