Want To Avoid A Turkey Coma After Thanksgiving Dinner? Try These Ideas

For those looking for ways to stay awake after eating their turkey feast this Thanksgiving there are a few activities one can do with friends and family after dinner.

Immediately after there is typically a ton of dishes that need cleared and sometimes washed by hand. If one can muster movement, jump in and start helping. Your cook or hosts will be grateful and thankful -- and maybe you will also get an extra piece of pie out of it to take home.

If moving one's body that soon is not an option, one may need to wait until the food settles in the stomach. However, to avoid possibly falling asleep sitting up and potentially drooling in front of loved ones, take a short break and then head outside for a walk with the children or grandchildren in the neighborhood.

Such an escapade not only helps wake one up, but also provides quality time with loved ones who are not seen on a regular basis.

For those who need or want more than a walk, a friendly game of touch football might be in order. An entire football field is not required just enough space to throw, run a little and catch — and have fun creating memories.

Some families like to get out of the house after dinner and take a ride to see the local sights, the Oglebay Festival of Lights or even take in a movie at a local theater.

If taking in a movie, it is probably OK to fall asleep if the turkey belly cannot be resisted; no one will be able to see the drooling occur, though potential snoring might be frowned up by other theatergoers.

If seeing the latest blockbuster isn't one's thing, breaking out good old board games can be fun for everyone. Scrabble, Monopoly and even card games can be enjoyed by many after the dinner table is cleared. Need a game that is more exciting and at times downright wild? Try one called "Spoons." Just make sure the table you are using is a sturdy one.

And if all else fails, embrace the coziness and warmth felt in one's belly provided by the holiday tradition known lovingly by some as "turkey coma."
