I have spent my entire career in energy and manufacturing, and even now in my retirement, I remain amazed at the ingenuity, dedication, and perseverance of American manufacturers.
They have helped our country recover from every economic downturn over the last 120 years, and most importantly, they have helped us navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
Manufacturers are literally our light at the end of a very challenging economic tunnel.
Having said that, I am bewildered that some in Congress believe now is the right time to levy new or higher taxes on the creators and producers of our society. As the complicated and confusing budget reconciliation process unfolds in Washington, it is baffling to me that some want to finance new programs on the backs of hard-working manufacturers.
Additional taxes on domestic natural resources and taxes on U.S.-made plastics are very bad ideas that would continue to fuel inflation, damage the manufacturing industry, and cost scores of jobs across the U.S., while at the same time propping up imports of goods and resources from other nations.
I have confidence that West Virginia's congressional delegation, especially Sen. Joe Manchin, will hold the line against this attack on American energy and manufacturing jobs. Manchin is uniquely positioned to protect West Virginia -- and frankly the entire nation -- from the menu of horrible economic ideas being considered in D.C. right now, and we are lucky to have him.
