As a proposed independent bipartisan commission -- which would have consisted of five Democratic and five Republican U.S. senators, to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol insurrection/riot, in which supporters of Donald J. Trump, at the then-president's urging, stormed the U.S. Capitol Building in an attempt to block the certification of Joe Biden's presidential victory in the 2020 election -- was essentially "killed" via the filibuster, led by Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, it appears that perhaps the democratic form of government in our great nation may be in serious jeopardy.
Governmental investigations of such matters of national concern over the years have largely garnered bipartisan support and have been relatively commonplace throughout our history, as such have taken place to fully investigate major events such as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Iran-Contra scandal in 1987, the horrendous terrorist attack on our nation on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as many other issues of national importance.
Prior to the blocking of the Senate filibuster, which incredibly is supported by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, sadly and undemocratically essentially put an end in the august venue's attempt to discover important, yet unknown, facts about the violent insurrection.
Incredibly, President Trump continues to promote the "Big Lie" that the recent presidential election was somehow rigged against him, with absolutely no substantiation whatsoever, and has also oftentimes stated that he expects to be reinstated as president by August 2021, which could prove to inspire even more violent transgressions on the part of his supporters.
Does (Trump) even possess any legitimate perception of reality, propriety and decorum at this point?
We as a country historically have simply always been better than this. We must, once again, prioritize what is right and what is best for our country over self-serving political ambitions, for if such is no longer the case, I fear we may well be facing our greatest internal challenge as a nation since the American Civil War over 150 years ago.
I believe, and I pray, that we will successfully repel this grave challenge, and emerge all the better as a nation.
