Return to School for Marshall, Wetzel Counties in Question

2 min read

Just as high school students in Marshall and Wetzel counties were preparing to return to school next week, the map struck again.

Marshall County had put forth its return to school plan last week that would have students at John Marshall High School and Cameron High School back in the classroom. Now, though, with both counties in red on Saturday's West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resorces' COVID-19 map, that leaves the planned return to school up to how the map looks on Sunday.

If both counties remain red Sunday, then high school students won't be in school Monday. If the counties are orange or lower, then the plan as of this past week was for classes to resume.

Marshall County sits just outside of the orange designation with an infection rate per 100 people of 8.12, according to Saturday's map. A rate under 8 is required for the map to be orange.

Wetzel County, meanwhile, has an infection rate of 8.24 per 100 residents.

In Ohio County, Wheeling Park High School students are set to return to the classroom four days this week for the first time since early October.

Wheeling Park Principal Meredith Dailer said Friday that returning to the classroom is the best thing for both students and teachers.

"The second nine weeks was certainly challenging -- not being in the building," she said. "It was just not school, and we're ready to get back to normal school."

All students in Ohio County Schools are slated to be in their classrooms Monday and Tuesday, then again on Thursday and Friday.

Wednesdays will continue to be a day for remote learning while school buildings are cleaned and disinfected.

Students at middle schools and elementary schools were set to begin that schedule this past week, but wintry conditions forced the cancellations of in-person schooling on Monday and Tuesday.
