Last Year Wasn’t All Bad

By HEATHER ZIEGLER 3 min read

In this week's Antique of the Week column, Maureen Zambito has an interesting article about collectible clocks and calendars. I don't know about you, but I plan to burn all my 2020 calendars in the outdoor fire pit as we stand around and wish the year farewell.

And what a year for all of us. It's not easy to look back and recall all the good things when so much ink was spent on the pandemic that disrupted our lives in so many ways.

However, I looked over my calendar, especially the past 10 months, and realized there were positive things that happened and good times shared on these pages.

What made many of the stories of this past year in the Life section memorable was the fact that you, the readers, provided your ideas, recipes, hobbies and other activities with us.

When the pandemic sent everyone home, you offered us your favorite comfort food recipes that included everything from banana bread to homemade pizza. Thank you.

When the summer months rolled around and vacations were put on hold, you told us how you had experienced staycations in your own backyard or at some of the best parks in the country that are right here in the Ohio Valley. Thank you.

In May, retiring Corpus Christi School principal Dick Taylor and incoming principal Shannon Wall offered their combined experience in the classroom that helped their students navigate a jumble of a new school year. Thank you.

In September, you told us about your need to be outside and to enjoy the rain-free weather that allowed us to get some fresh air and peddle our way through the pandemic.

The sale of bicycles soared and the area trails were filled with bike riders, joggers and parents pushing strollers filled with happy little ones. Thank you.

One of my favorite stories -- and I hope yours, too, was told to me by Vietnam veteran Ron Woloshan.

Ron told of learning about the Kent State University shooting while sitting atop a tank in Cambodia in 1970. Then decades later, he and his wife made an emotional trip to Vietnam where he unearthed old feelings and found peace with it all. Thank you.

So you see, it's not been all bad.

We have shared a lot of ups and downs, but the positives have kept all of us putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward.

Now with the vaccine en route and a little more daylight each afternoon, there are definitely signs of plenty more good stories waiting to hit these pages. Thank you, in advance.
