Hancock County earned a dubious distinction when the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources daily COVID-19 alert map was released Friday morning.

Hancock had the highest infection rate of any of West Virginia's 55 counties. Its rate was 158.68 cases per 100,000 residents. The next highest was Mineral County at 151.53.

Three of the four counties in the Northern Panhandle -- Hancock, Brooke and Marshall -- remained in "red" on Friday's state alert map.

Ohio County was in "orange," though its percent positivity had risen again after hovering near the map's "gold" threshold.

Hancock also showed a 9.86 percent positivity Friday. Brooke County had an infection rate of 118.51 cases per 100,00 residents and a percent positivity of 11.92.

Ohio County showed an infection rate of 71.06 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 5.63. That number was 5.09 the day before, and a county moves to "gold" when its percent positivity falls under 5 percent.

Marshall County had an infection rate of 98.73 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 10.44.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department announced 50 new positive COVID cases Friday night, bringing Ohio County's total to 2,069 cases and 29 total COVID-related deaths. The Marshall County Health Department announced 10 new confirmed positive cases and four new probable cases Friday. Marshall County's totals are now 1,406 confirmed cases and 228 probable cases, 11 hospitalizations and 38 associated deaths.
