BY MIKE NOLTING Preparations are full go for the Monongalia County school year. Classes begin for most students on Aug. 23. “If you’re not sure what school you’re supposed to be going to, you’re brand new to the area and you’re not sure where your attendance zone is, there are some tricky ones in Monongalia County, just call the board office,” Monongalia County School Superintendent Eddie Campbell said. If you were to shimmy through Pantry Plus More’s Westover warehouse in the weeks before its annual Back to School Bash, you’d likely think the whole chaotic undertaking was headed for disaster.  Pallets and piles, boxes and bags — wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor with no apparent ...

National directive might threaten youth outdoor programs in W.Va. schools

BY CHRIS LAWRENCE CHARLESTON — A guidance document from the United States Department of Education could threaten two popular youth outdoor programs in West Virginia schools. U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona moved to block funding from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to schools that offer hunter education and archery programs. Cardona’s guidance is in regard to the bi-partisan Safer Communities Act, which passed last year. The act was approved with the help of 15 Republican senators’ votes, including that of Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West ...
