Appeal of ‘Big Boys’ squares largely on its star, humor

For a long time, movies about the queer experience existed solely to discuss the pain associated with not being accepted, or the actual abuse that can occur. And while those issues do exist, some filmmakers — especially those who are themselves part of the LGBTQ community— choose to focus more on the joyful or humorous aspects. Corey Sherman is one such filmmaker, and in his film “Big Boys,” recently on VOD, he gives the audience a wholesome, happy look at a young boy discovering himself.   When 14-year-old Jamie (Isaac Krasner) realizes that his favorite cousin ...

‘Big Boys’ director talks about creating movies that they wanted to see while growing up

One of the benefits of being a creator is the ability to make something you wish you had been able to experience in your youth. That is part of what drove Corey Sherman to write and direct his new film “Big Boys.”   The Dominion Post had an opportunity to sit with Sherman and talk about making his film.  The movie, which follows Jamie, a 14-year-old who gets a crush on his cousin’s boyfriend while they’re out camping, is  sweet and wholesome. When “A Quiet Place” premiered in 2018, I thought it was a unique gimmick and definitely a great theatrical experience, but I wasn’t as blown away by it as many people were. When the sequel rolled around, I was even less invested. But I loved Michael Sarnoski’s movie “Pig,” and I think Lupita Nyong’o proved her horror chops in “Us,” so I was willing to give “A Quiet Place: Day One” a chance.  When a group from the hospice center where Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) is staying heads to New York City for a show, she is hesitant to go. But Nurse Rueben (Alex Wolff) ...

A bit in love with ‘A Family Affair’

“High School Musical” came out at precisely the wrong time for me to care about it. My kids weren’t old enough to want to watch it, and I was definitely not the target demographic, so I missed Zac Efron’s rise to stardom. He was largely off my radar until last year when he starred in one of my favorite movies, “The Iron Claw.” After watching Richard LaGravenese’s “A Family Affair” on Netflix, I’m now beginning to wonder if I was sleeping on Efron’s career this whole time.  Zara (Joey King) works for Chris Cole (Efron) as his assistant. Zara puts up with ...
